Scary Potter and the Case of the Haunted Pot Roast

Heinz, our big brown house pony, is afraid of approximately… everyone. Except Chris and me. If you are not us, congratulations, you are officially terrifying.

Recently, a family friend moved in, which means Heinz has upgraded from mild suspicion to full growl, bark, and lunge mode. It is like living with a furry, four-legged bouncer who does not want anyone on the guest list.

This morning, Chris tried to feed him, but Heinz refused. That is his signature move when stressed. Nothing says “do not talk to me” like skipping kibble. So, Chris got creative and pulled out my leftover pot roast from our date night. Surely, beefy perfection would do the trick, right?

Wrong. Heinz was not having it. Chris sighed and said, “He is even scared of pot roast.”

Now, here is where my brain decided to improvise. I looked at Chris and said, “Who is Scary Potter?”

Chris blinked. “That is not what I said, but I like it.”

And just like that, Heinz’s Halloween costume was born. Forget the usual doggie pumpkin get-up. This year, our neurotic Dane is going as Scary Potter: The Dog Who Lived in Fear.

Moral of the story: Sometimes misheard words are way more fun than the real ones.
